Nixle sign-up: Detailed Instructions

1. Click on "Sign Up Now!" to reach the registration [Step 1 Sign Up (It's easy and anyone can join)] which requires an e-mail address, a password, your name, and (optional) a cell phone number.
2. Click on "I Accept, Sign me up!" to ge to [Step 2 (Your home area)] is important because it enables the system to decide what information may be relevent to you. This requires Home Address, City, State, and Zip Code.
3. Click "Continue" to get to [Contact Address] screen.  When you fill in the information and click "Save", a [Location] window appears and you are asked to confirm Nixle's understanding of your address.  
4. When you choose "Apply" you get to [Step 3 (Refer your friends]. "Skip & Finish" brings you to [Congratulations] where you can enter some optional demographic info and/or "Go to Nixle".
5. You should be at a screen that is headed [{Your-Name}'s Wire] and it should have a series of items along the left of the screen that have  logos of Harding Township Police Department.  At present (29-Sep-2011), there are two "Alerts" on that list.

1. The list of alerts presented in step 5 contains items beyond Harding Township (most often Morristown Police Department).
   1. To narrow the list of alerts to Harding Township Police Department, click on the "Settings" tab and deselect all but Harding Township and click "Save".  Having done that, you should be returned to the Home screen and the only messages should be from the Harding Township Police Department.
2. There are no alerts presented at Step 5.
   1. Your address has been interpreted incorrectly.  To add Harding Township Police Department to your list of alerts, go to the settings tab and click "Search for it here."  Enter Harding, NJ in the "Near" window and "Go!.  The Harding Township PD should be on the retrieved list and can be clicked to subscribe.
3. The address in the [Location] window of step 3 does not look correct.
   1. Your "Town" is not in the resolved address   {Example: 200 Lee's Hill Rd, Basking Ridge, NJ, 07920 resolves to 200 Lees Hill Rd, , NJ 07920}   This is a Nixle data issue.  You may need to click OK and add Harding Township Police Department manually as described above.
   2. Your Town resolves differently than you entered   {Example: 21 Blue Mill Rd, New Vernon, NJ, 07976 resolves to 21 Blue Mill Rd, Morristown, NJ 07960}   This is another Nixle data issue.  Nixle has been informed of these issues and they are working them.  In the meantime, you may have to add Harding Township Police Department manually as described above.

To receive SMS text messages to your cell phone, you must enter a cell phone number and then respond to a generated "opt in" message to activate the cell phone message delivery.  In addition, you can access other alert information services (the town your parents live in, areas along your commute, where your vacation home is, etc). by adding the location  using the "Locations" tab.
